Satellites of Milky Way- and M31-like galaxies with TNG50: quenched fractions, gas content, and star formation histories

چکیده
We analyse the quenched fractions, gas content, and star formation histories of ~1200 satellite galaxies with $M_* \geq 5 \times 10^6~{\rm M}_\odot$ around 198 Milky Way- (MW) Andromeda-like (M31) hosts in TNG50, highest-resolution simulation IllustrisTNG. Satellite fractions are larger for smaller masses, distances to their host galaxy, more massive M31-like compared MW-like hosts. As satellites cross host's virial radius, content drops: most within 300 kpc lack detectable reservoirs at $z=0$, unless they like Magellanic Clouds M32. Nevertheless, stellar assembly exhibits a large degree diversity. On average, cumulative extended brighter, later infall, those less Based on these relationships, we can even infer infall periods observedMWand M31 dwarfs: e.g. 0-4 Gyr ago Leo I, 4-8 0-2 M32 IC 10, respectively. Ram pressure stripping (in combination tidal stripping) deprives TNG50 ultimately quenches formation, though only few per cent present-day MW/M31-like appear as jellyfish. The typical time since quenching currently is $6.9^{+2.5}_{-3.3}~{\rm Gyr}$ ago. results consistent observed MW satellites, however, SAGA survey \sim 10^{8-9}~{\rm exhibit lower than other, analogues.

Cosmic Star Formation from the Milky Way and its Satellites
We use observations and evolutionary models of local objects to interpret a recent determination of the star-formation history of the universe. By fitting the global star-formation rate, the model predicts the ratio of spheroid to disk mass of ∼1, an intergalactic medium (IGM) whose mass is ∼2.3 times the mass in stars, and whose metallicity is ∼0.1 Z⊙.
متن کاملDust Formation in Milky Way-like Galaxies
We introduce a dust model for cosmological simulations implemented in the movingmesh code arepo and present a suite of cosmological hydrodynamical zoom-in simulations to study dust formation within galactic haloes. Our model accounts for the stellar production of dust, accretion of gas-phase metals onto existing grains, destruction of dust through local supernova activity, and dust driven by wi...
متن کاملStar Formation in the Milky Way and Nearby Galaxies
We review progress over the past decade in observations of large-scale star formation, with a focus on the interface between extragalactic and Galactic studies. Methods of measuring gas contents and star formation rates are discussed, and updated prescriptions for calculating star formation rates are provided. We review relations between star formation and gas on scales ranging from entire gala...
متن کاملStar Formation Histories of the Galactic Satellites
Late accretion models for formation of the Galactic halo require that many Galactic satellite galaxies have been cannibalised into the halo field. Comparison of the metallicity and age distribution function of stars in the surviving satellites with the apparently exclusively old stars in the field halo can constrain the importance of any such process. We have developed a new objective technique...
متن کاملThe Star Formation Histories of the M31 and M33 Spheroids
I review the observational constraints on the star formation histories in the spheroids of M33 and M31, the other two spiral galaxies in the Local Group. M33 does not possess a traditional bulge; instead, it has a small nuclear region hosting stars with a wide range of ages. The star formation history of the M33 halo is poorly constrained, but composite spectra of its halo globular clusters imp...
